When A Phase III Company Has The Loan Called… What Are The Options?

An uploader is a person or entity purchasing a medical patent in anticipation of moving it closer to the patient while profiting from the transfer sale or licensing of the technology. This alone tells you that my job is anything but boring.
Business never goes exactly as planned. That’s because we human beings are so alike, yet so vastly different—which leads us to the three basic kinds of uploaders of medical patents. Healthcare soldiers seem to take this in stride, knowing there is always another subclassification.
So, what are the Type One, Type Two, and Type Three Uploaders?
1. ALWAYS LOOK UNDER THE HOOD – The Type One Uploader
Type Ones need to check everything under the hood, the suspension, the exhaust, the tanks, and the trunks with a microscope. A finished puzzle is a must. They want every single tidbit of manufacturing data, patient data, FDA submitted data, and financial data—including a report on who was the last person who sneezed that could have contaminated the batch or the nanotechnology! For a Type One, anything less than absolute certainty is an unacceptable risk.
2. CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD, KICK THE TIRES, AND FILL THE TANK – The Type Two Uploader
Type Twos look at some of the data, but not all of the data. Some cards are enough cards to play. If the expert opinions indicate it’s “a go,” they see a distinct possibility of a 5X exit in two years. If the deal doesn't quite pan out as planned, they figure they can always add another partner or bring in some outside experts to fix the tech or attempt to license it. If everything else fails, they can absorb the loss and use it as a learning experience for next time. Type Twos are comfortable with moderate, calculated risk.
3. THAT’S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CAR I HAVE EVER SEEN – The Type Three Uploader
Type Threes listen to the expert opinions, look at a flawless pitch deck, and drive the medical patent right off the showroom floor. For them, massive exits of 10X or more are possible after funding a Phase II trial for eighteen months, with the goal of offloading to a Phase III entity or a major manufacturer. In this arena, it is well known that perhaps only 10% of these early-stage deals become highly profitable—but for the ones that do make money, they win incredibly big. Type Threes thrive in high-risk, high-reward scenarios.
🚗 Finding the Right Accessories
Naturally, there are many different subclassifications within Types One, Two, and Three. Similar to automobiles, there are different nuances, crossovers, fallbacks, velocities, and capital investments required when handling what is fundamentally a depreciating asset. Each Type simply has its own special combination of horsepower and accessories to make the ride easier.
This seems to be the antithesis of the rigid Type A and Type B personality types I was fed as an undergraduate. In the real world of innovation, it takes a lot more than two categories to map out how people handle risk and reward.
🎽 The President’s Viewpoint
In business, there are few absolutes. When driving a business vehicle, we always need to look forward through the windshield while constantly checking our mirrors for what is coming up fast behind us. That is how you can diminish risk.
Still, one of the greatest dangers a business driver faces is switching from one Type to another in microseconds. Indecision and shifting gears too fast can drive us right into the wrong lane.
At Medical Patents Broker Inc., we assist in finding—and staying in—the correct lane.
